Sound Advice from Greg Lemond

Greg Lemond's Complete Book of Bicycling
by Greg Lemond & Kent Gordis

Bernard Hinault probably wouldn't thank me for including this
book in a website dedicated to him, but Lemond's book is
every bit as good as the one listed above. It is clear, concise
and contains all the information that you would expect to find
in a book written by a multiple Tour de France winner. Every
aspect is covered, from training and fitness, to diet and cycle
maintenance. The first chapter gives an insight into the career
of Lemond and he tells his side of the Hinault/ Lemond duel in
the 1986 Tour de France.

The Tour de France from The Master Photographer

The Tour de France & its Heroes
by Graham Watson

This beautifully illustrated book concentrates on the !980's and
features many photographs of all the big hitters in world cycling
of that period. Stars such as Hinault, Lemond, Fignon, Kelly,
Roche and many more are all featured here and Watson's easy
style makes this a joy to read and reminisce over. A chapter
titled "The Hinault Years" gives us more than thirty pages on
"Le Blaireau" and subsequent pieces on the Points race, Maillot
Grimpeur title and Laurent Fignon all add up to a "must" for any
cyclist's library.

Annual Stage-by-Stage Stories of the Giro & Tour de France

Tour
by various authors - published by Kennedy Brothers

Published since 1969, the "Tour" series covers the two
biggest stage races in the professional cycling calendar.
Each race is reported on stage-by-stage throughout the
whole of the event and reminds me of the daily coverage
of the Tour de France in it's style. The journalist(s) writing
for this book give their personal opinion on the riders, route
and organization and it would appear that each stage was
written on the day itself and then compiled into this publication.
A good series that is let down slightly by some poor photographs.
Perhaps the publishers keep their costs down this way.
As far as I can gather, the "Tour" books were printed until 1990.
Nevertheless, a valuable addition to your collection and should you
find them, they will no doubt be reduced in price.

Hinault's Professional History from the Beginning

The Bernard Hinault Story
by Pierre Martin

Out of all the books I've read about Bernard Hinault, this one gives the
most detail on his professional career. Written on a year-by-year basis, from
his apprenticeship in pro cycling in 1975-76, through his numerous victories in
late 1970s and early 1980s, this book is one for the serious enthusiast. Every
significant move that Hinault made throughout this period is listed; from his first
pro victory to his fourth Tour de France win; every Classic victory; all other
big dates in the cycling calendar - they are all in this book.
There are many photographs, black and white as well as colour,
throughout the book corresponding to the appropriate year. Each one fills
the whole page and gives a real insight to the race conditions and equipment used
in this era I couldn't have started the earlier years on this website without the help
of this excellent book - again published by Kennedy Bros.
