Hinault's intention for this year was to win the Tour de France. He had been maturing as a rider of some distinction and felt that it was time for The Tour. Having used the Tour of Spain as a "training" race - and won it with 5 stage wins - he was in perfect shape for the biggest race of the year . . .
. . . When the Tour arrived, Hinault seemed less than urgent to grasp the yellow jersey. The prologue saw him in 10th place and he almost cruised the rest of the race, confident that the length of the Tour would be in his favour.
