This year
saw the introduction of a new talent to the cycling world. As a relative unknown,
Bernard Hinault rode away from the field to win the Ghent-Wevelgem Classic
race by over one minute, apparently finding the win "easy"! Liege-Bastogne-Liege
gave him another fabulous victory over all the top riders . . .
. . . His
first attempt at the "mini Tour de France", the Dauphine Libere,
saw him lead, win 2 stages, crash out and then recover to win the race overall.
This gutsy performance (among others) earned him the title, "Le Blaireau".
His strength, courage and tenacity would prove to be legendary . . .
